Anticipated Salary Range: $58,368 - $90,000 (may vary based on budget, UNC salary administration, and/or candidate qualifications)


About University Advancement

The Division of University Advancement is the friend-raising and fund-raising arm of East Carolina University. All of its activities are designed to generate support, financial or otherwise, for the university. Units within the division work together to identify, involve, cultivate, and solicit alumni and friends of ECU to gain private financial support that enhances the long- and short-range growth and welfare of the university.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement oversees:

  • Alumni Relations

  • ECU Foundation

  • Medical and Health Sciences Foundation of ECU

  • University Development


Job Duties

As part of a successful fundraising team, the Advancement Officer will utilize relationship building skills, strong work ethic, a goals-oriented mentality, and motivation to be an effective member of this mission-driven organization.

Responsibilities include:

Fundraising (60%)

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, close, and steward donor prospects through personal and virtual engagement (10–15 meetings per month)

  • Match donor interests with university priorities, develop proposals, and negotiate commitments

  • Share campus stories through written, verbal, and visual communication

  • Travel (overnight and day) required monthly

Portfolio Management (20%)

  • Use data to meet quarterly and annual performance metrics

  • Generate new contacts and expand existing donor relationships

  • Plan and execute travel strategy 90+ days in advance

  • Balance follow-up and adapt to emerging needs

Campus Liaison (20%)

  • Serve as liaison to one or more designated campus areas

  • Maintain relationships with Deans, Department Chairs, Program Directors, and faculty

  • Coordinate senior leadership travel to assigned regions

  • Attend university-sponsored events to engage alumni, donors, and prospects

  • Collaborate with divisional colleagues and campus partners

Reporting: Reports directly to the Senior Advancement Officer for University Development.
Other: Must be available for flexible hours and travel.


Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • At least 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience

  • At least 3 years of full-time professional experience in a metrics-driven, relationship-based role

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Experience interacting with a wide range of individuals and positions

  • Demonstrated success in a metrics-driven environment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Master’s degree

  • Knowledge of higher education fundraising

  • Familiarity with fundraising best practices and CRM software (Blackbaud, Agilon ONE, ThankView, LinkedIn)

  • Demonstrated success in annual, major, and planned gift solicitations

  • Client-facing, relationship management, or volunteer management experience

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Understanding of finances and budgets

  • Experience working with volunteers to increase private support

  • Strong problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence

  • Ability to manage complex situations, prioritize, and meet deadlines

  • Commitment to ECU’s mission and values

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to high ethical standards
