MARCH FIRST FRIDAY ARTWALK
GREENVILLE, N.C – On Friday, March 6, the DownEast National Sculpture Exhibition opens all over Pitt County. The opening reception coincides with Uptown Greenville’s monthly First Friday ArtWalk series and is scheduled on March 6th from 5pm-8pm. The indoor aspect of the exhibition will be held at Emerge Gallery and Art Center located in Uptown Greenville. The indoor exhibition will be on display from March 2-30, 2020. The outdoor entries will be on display for one year at several locations in Pitt County including three in Uptown Greenville, the Greenville Museum of Art, the Greenville Greenway, the Town of Winterville, the Town of Farmville, the Greenville-Pitt Airport, and the ECU Health Science Campus Student Center.
About Glen Zweygardt
This year’s juror, Glen Zweygardt, born and raised in northwest Kansas, received his BFA from Wichita State University in sculpture and painting. He then earned his MFA from the Rinehart School of Sculpture at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. For over forty years, Glenn has been an active sculptor and educator. With more than fifty solo exhibitions and multiple purchase awards to his name, he shows works both nationally and internationally. His sculptures are included in many university, museum, outdoor and private collections. Now an emeritus Professor of Sculpture at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Glenn continues to make signature sculptures in his Alfred Station studio. His creations of steel, ductile iron, stainless steel, cast glass, cast bronze and aluminum are often combined with stone from around the world. These sculptures range from monumental outdoor works to small, intimate pieces.
The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge and the Student Galleries of East Carolina University have collaborated to bring the visitors and residents to the Pitt County the DownEast National Sculpture Exhibition. The DownEast National Sculpture exhibition provides public art throughout Pitt County, making our area a more enjoyable place to live, work, and play. Other community partners include the City of Greenville, the Town of Winterville, the Greenville Museum of Art, East Carolina University, and the Town of Farmville. Our partners have provided a space to display entries and have provided a combined total of $16,250 in awards and prizes, making this exhibition competitive among 3D artists in the country.
Exhibiting alongside the DownEast Indoor Sculpture Exhibition in the Harvey Wooten Gallery will be the work of Dee Dee Oliver. Dee Dee Oliver is an intuitive visual artist from Wilson, North Carolina. From a family of creative people; she is the great niece of folk artist Vollis Simpson. Her artwork is celebration of connections, missed connections, and reconnections of color, line, gestural marks & sometimes the absence of all the above. Her abstract paintings have been in exhibitions in Raleigh and currently on display as part of a public art installation in several locations in downtown Wilson, including the Whirligig Park. Additionally, Oliver has been a professional photographer for many years and is currently the Visual Arts Coordinator for the Arts Council of Wilson in Wilson, North Carolina.

The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Pitt County by promoting artists and arts organizations, educating through the arts, and making the arts accessible to the entire community. The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge was founded in 2000 as Emerge Gallery. It has since grown in its role to being the local arts council for Pitt County, as well as in its size encompassing over 8000 square feet in a historic building in the heart of Uptown Greenville.
