About Our Guest Speaker:

Rachel Louise Snyder is an acclaimed author, investigative journalist, and professor, recognized for her deep exploration of social issues, particularly domestic violence. Her book, No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us, has been praised for its groundbreaking investigation into domestic abuse, drawing comparisons to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. The book highlights the severe impact of domestic violence in America and has earned prestigious accolades, including the New York Public Library’s Bernstein Journalism Award and the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism.

Snyder’s memoir, Women We Buried, Women We Burned, offers a poignant look at her own troubled childhood and the resilience she developed through her global reporting experiences.

In her career as a journalist, Snyder has covered human rights, conflict, and disaster across more than 60 countries. Her work has appeared in major publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, Slate, and The Washington Post. She has also contributed to radio programs like Latitudes on public radio and the Audible original podcast The First Wife: John Meehan’s Reign of Terror.

Snyder is a distinguished professor in the creative writing program at American University in Washington, DC. She is currently working on a narrative examination of gender discrimination and criminalized survivors within the judicial system. Her earlier works include Fugitive Denim and the novel What We’ve Lost is Nothing.
